Word War II nurse celebrates 103rd birthday by Idowu Olabode : December 13, 2014, 01:29:18 AM
It was a birthday few people get to celebrate. Frances Ostergren from Sevier County turned 103 Friday.

"My parents lived to be 100, and I thought that was good. But I just keep going," Ostergren said.

Ostergren, who was born in 1911, celebrated with her friends from the American Legion at Mountain brook nursing home.

During WWII, she served in the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services) as anurse.

"I've retired three times. I think that's enough don't you?" she said.

Ostergren was born in Sevier County, but moved away and worked as a teacher, a lab technician, and for the Navy.

She came back to Sevierville to take care of her parents.

After she retired, she began drawing which is one of her passions and was also a charter member of the Sevierville Garden Club.

So what's her secret to a successful and happy life?

"You just try to keep on going like you are, and just try to keep on a little bit better than you did before."
