UK Coronavirus Testing Website Crashes in 2 minutes After 5,000 Kits Ordered by katty : April 24, 2020, 05:18:05 PM
-Downing Street said 5,000 home testing kits were ordered in the first two minutes of a government portal opening

England's new coronavirus home testing kits ran out in just two minutes today as the government struggled to cope with demand.

Downing Street claimed 5,000 of the kits were ordered within two minutes of an online portal opening for 10million key workers and their families.

A further 15,000 testing slots at drive-through testing sites were taken this morning - forcing the government to close the entire self-testing website for the day.

The online portal will reopen at 8am on Saturday.

No10 said it would be when the next batch of test slots become available, but it's not known if that will be at midnight or later on the weekend.

A spokesman admitted: "The reason the website stopped taking bookings was because all the available slots had gone."

At the moment, it's still unclear if some of the 5,000 home test kits that were ordered today are part of the supply for future days.

That could mean it takes some days for the lucky 5,000 who were able to get through to see their kits arrive.

While all the drive-through testing slots were for today, the home test kits are due to be delivered by Royal Mail and Amazon - and it is not clear exactly when.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "Within two minutes of the portal opening this morning, 5,000 test kits had been ordered - that's the available capacity for today.

"In terms of drive-through slots, we would anticipate 15,000 tests being done at those drive-through sites today, which is the available capacity."

The problem is the exact opposite of the one that's been plaguing the government's testing programme until now.

For weeks Britain was filling less than half its testing capacity, which stands at 51,000.

But the tables have turned after Health Secretary Matt Hancock dramatically expanded testing to all key workers with symptoms, and their families.

That led to a surge in demand as 10million people, including supermarket workers, delivery drivers, teachers and phone engineers, became eligible.
