The National Open University of Nigeria is presently holding its 5th Convocation Ceremony today Saturday, 16th January, 2016 at University Village, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN),
Jabi, Abuja, FCT.

The event which kicked off yesterday Friday, 15th January, 2016 with the Convocation Lecture by Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, Vice-Chancellor, Sokoto State University, Sokoto had the theme: “Open and Distance Education and Socio-Economic Development”.

It was a beautiful sight to behold with over 4,000 graduands already seated beautifully with their sparkling robes before 9am this morning.

The highly attended convocation ceremony came to live with the commencement of the academic procession followed by the investiture of HRH Igwe Ambassador Lawrence Okolio Chikezie Agubuzu, OON, KSM as the Chancellor, of the National Open University.

This was followed by the addresses from the President Federal Republic of Nigeria, ably represented by the Secretary to the Nigeria University Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie and the Vice Chancellor, NOUN, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe.

According to the convocation brochure, over 10, 000 students will today, be coffered with certificates, diplomas, Bachelor degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas.

Also Masters and Honourary Doctorate degrees would be conferred on graduates of the institution found worthy in character and learning, as well as other deserving individuals.

In all, 15 graduands are said to be graduating with a First Class Honours (9 males and 6 females), among which are the former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who is graduating with a Masters in Christian Theology; and a retired Navy officer, Rear Admiral Orisha, a 70 year-old student graduating with 1st class honours in Mathematics.

Thousands of travellers presently converged here at the convocation ground, the permanent site of the NOUN to witness this epoch making event include parents, guardians, friends of the University, invited guest and members of the general public.

In an earlier statement released by the NOUN’s Director of Media and Information, Dr. Ronke Ogunmakin, the hosting of the ongoing 5th convocation ceremony is a special occasion with the relocation to the permanent site of the university and the inauguration of the Senate building. The beautifully carved Senate building, will serve as the main administrative block which will house the Specialist Hospital of the university sponsored by TETFUND. This beautifully carved building is also expected to house the School of Health Sciences, already relocated to Abuja from Lagos.

If you can remember, NOUN has lately been a subject of attention in the education sector with cheering news perpetually emanating from the university.

Latest of one of such news is  approval from the senate for graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria to participate and partake in the National Youth Service Corps one year programme.
