The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives president Alh. Abdulrafiu Alani Adeniji has stated that the ongoing strike action embarked upon by Nurses under the umbrella of JOHESU is an attempt to save the nation's health sector from collapse.

Speaking in  a townhall meeting with nurses yesterday in his home state Abeokuta, the association president highlighted issues that led to the current industrial action and steps the union had earlier  taken to avert the ongoing strike.

"There have been series of meetings with the government and most of these meetings have produced either MoUs or agreements.Besides, there are also NICN's pronoucements on some of these issues yet the government has chosen to treat the genuine demands of over 95% of workers in the health sector with disdain and entrenched a reign of impunity of just 5% over the 95%"

"It should be noted that all of us are affected by the strike in one way or the other. We have family members who should be receiving treatment but are not because of the strike."

"If we do not take this step now, generations to come will ask us what we have done" Adeniji said.

He also berate the federal government for violating her own law. He listed some of the union's demands as:

1. Promotion from CONHESS 14 - 15

2. Immediate release of circular on extension of retirement age

3. Skipping of CONHESS 10

4. Correction of lopsidedness in constitution of board membership of hospitals.

5. Appointment of Honourary consultants in line with NICN judgement.

6. Presidential committee report on harmony

7. Job evaluation

8. Salary adjustment

9. Scheme of service

The union president said that government has chosen to be evasive on these issues rather than ratififying them.

JOHESU has made it clear it  wants no further negotiations that have yielded nothing for almost two years but  circulars of full implementation of all these demands.
